CULLMAN — Linda Kathryn Whatley Smothers

Graveside Services for Linda Kathryn Whatley Smothers, 63, of Cullman will be at 3 p.m. Friday, Oct. 4, 2013, at Sardis Baptist Church Cemetery, the Rev. Mackey Watts officiating.

Linda was born March 28, 1950, in Cullman to Freeman Edward and Doris Virginia Vincent Whatley. She passed away Tuesday, Oct. 1, at Cullman Regional Medical Center. Mrs. Smothers was raised in Cullman, but lived in Jones Chapel. She started working at the age of 16. Linda waitressed at the Busy Bee Café, the old Jacks on Highway 31, the slaughterhouse, and was even a truck driver for a time. She sat with the elderly at night, was a dietician at Cullman Regional and the dietary supervisor at Woodland Hospital, and finally at Pressac.

Mrs. Smothers was known for being very straight forward, always shared her opinions vocally, whether you liked it or not. She made an impression you would not forget. She battled bone cancer, and for the last few years, struggled with other health issues. She loved the fall season and many animals.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and a brother, Ray Whatley.

Survivors include her husband, Phillip Smothers; a daughter, Lisa Darnell (David) Pigg of Addison; three grandsons, Zachary (Kayla) Darnell of Trinity, Patrick Darnell of Addison and Jacob Pigg of Addison; a sister, Deborah Bailey of Guntersville; a brother, Larry Whatley of Athens; and a host of cousins, nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends from 1 to 2 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Pallbearers will be Zachary Darnell, Jacob Pigg, David Pigg, Matthew Smothers, Kolton Denson, Lester Abbot, Wayne Rice and Baretta Hasting.
