John Howard Trinchitella

CULLMAN — John Howard Trinchitella was born in Chicago, Illinois, on June 3, 1943, and grew up in Pensacola, Florida where he graduated from Pensacola Catholic High School in 1961. A graduate of St. Bernard’s College in 1966, John was the vice-president of Howard Oil Company, a past president and board member of the Cullman Kiwanis Club, past chairman of the Sacred Heart School Board and a past board member at St. Bernard’s Prep School. He proudly served as an officer in the U. S. Navy and had a deep and enduring love for his country.

A natural and gifted athlete, he excelled through high school and college sports followed by over 40 years of success at the state, regional, and national levels as a tournament tennis player. In high school, he played every varsity sport, and made All Conference and All City finals for baseball and football. At St Bernard, he played varsity baseball.

He coached many boys and girls in tennis throughout the years. He coached football, baseball, and tennis in the Cullman Park and Recreation program. He conducted over 100 tennis events at the club, city and county levels and he served as the tennis professional for Terri Pines Country Club for 18 years. In 2012, he was inducted into the Cullman County Sports Hall of Fame.

John proudly served as a lieutenant in the United States Navy from 1966-1974. He completed US Naval Aviation flight training. Additionally, he served as a Communications Officer and Top Secret Control Officer in Norfolk, Virginia.

As Vice President of Howard Oil Company, John served with his business partner, Tommy Howard, for 41 years. They also owned and operated the Southmart Chevron stores, where John was known for his care, concern, and loyalty for his employees.

John had a strong and everlasting love for his family – Rachel, his wife of 48 years, Alice, his daughter, Jason, his son, and Chad, his son-in-law and his parents, brother and sisters.

John was a good and compassionate man who touched the lives of so many in his community as a friend, teacher, coach and mentor. He demonstrated his deep and abiding love and faith in God and his appreciation of God’s beauty in how he treated others, his love for animals, and his love of sharing his beautiful photos of the heavenly skies. He loved so many things about living in Cullman – living in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains with its beautiful skies, a strong community, and his multitude of friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, John Francis Trinchitella and Alma Falcone Trinchitella and is survived by his wife, Rachel; his son, Jason Trinchitella; his daughter, Alice Anne Trinchitella Apel; his son-in-law, Chad Apel; his brother, Chuck Trinchitella and sister-in-law Yvonne Trinchitella; his sisters, Marianne Trinchitella Weaver and brother-in-law Fred Weaver, and Rose Trinchitella Chambers and brother-in-law Jason Chambers; several nieces and nephews, and several precious pets.

Visitation will be Tuesday, October 1, at Moss Funeral Home, from 4-8 p.m., with the Rosary at 7:30 p.m.

Services will be held at St. Bernard Abbey church on Wednesday, October 2, at 10 a.m. Interment will follow at Cullman Memory Gardens.

Donations in John’s name can be made to Friends of Sacred Heart School Fund through the office at Sacred Heart Catholic School or to Cullman County Animal Shelter, 935 Convent Road NE, Cullman, AL 35055.
