Elmer Leroy Kirts

CULLMAN — Elmer Leroy Kirts, 96, of Cullman, Ala., passed away at Morningside of Cullman on Thursday, March 20, 2014.

He was predeceased by his wife of 73 years, Frances; his parents, Roy and Hazel Kirts; and one brother, Glenn.

Mr. Kirts was born in Riverside, Indiana, on November 5, 1917. He graduated in 1937 from Indiana Central in Indianapolis where he lettered in baseball (pitcher) and earned a degree in education. He worked as a teacher, a basketball coach, and a principal in Indiana for 16 years. In 1953, he retired from teaching; he worked for the Bendix Corporation in Human Resources. While in Michigan, he served on the school board and was president of the school board for four years.

In 1964, he transferred to Cullman, Ala., when Bendix relocated to Alabama. He became Director of Industrial Relations, a position he held until he retired from White Consolidated (formerly Bendix) in 1979.

He was an active member of the Masonic Lodge where he was a 32 degree Mason. He was also a member of St. Andrew’s Methodist Church where he also taught Sunday School.

Mr. Kirts and his wife spent their retirement years travelling; they visited the 50 states as well as Canada and Mexico. He was also an avid reader and enjoyed watching both Auburn and Alabama football games.

Mr. Kirts is survived by his three daughters Cassie Huck (Darrel) of Seguin, Texas; Judy Allred of Cullman; and Beverly Zehr (Dwain) of Priceville, Ala. He also is survived by 5 grandchildren: Sara Allred Barnett (Les)of Cullman; Eric Zehr (Kim) of Priceville, Ala.;  Kristin Allred of Savannah, Ga.; Emily Zehr of Priceville, Ala.;  and Lindsay Huck of Austin, Texas. He was the proud great-grandfather of 6 great-grandchildren: Eli and Carson Posman of Savannah, Ga.; Andrue and Jackson Barnett of Cullman and Aiden and Austin Zehr of Priceville, Ala.

A graveside service will be held at Cullman City Cemetery on Sunday, March 30 at 2:00 pm with Rev. Jonathan Todd officiating.

Memorial donations may be made to Southern Care Hospice in Hanceville, Ala.,, or St. Andrew’s Methodist Church in Cullman.

    Carlton Eugene Stafford, 82, of Cullman passed away Saturday, July 26, 2014, at Cullman Regional Medical Center. He was born April 14, 1932, James and Mary Katherine Brown Stafford. Mr. Stafford was an Air Force veteran of the Korean War. He was the original owner of Carlton’s restaurant.

    Susan Werner died Monday, July 21, 2014, as a result of an apparent fall at her home in Gainesville, Florida. Susan grew up in Jacksonville, Florida, and, after graduation from FSU, spent many years in Cullman, where she taught elementary school and received a master’s degree from UAB. While in Cullman, she married Robert Werner and helped run a family retail business.
