Walter Gene Cook

CULLMAN — Walter Gene Cook

Walter Gene Cook, 73, of Pensacola, Fla., passed away Friday, Dec. 7, 2012. He was born Oct. 28, 1939, in Brewton, Ala. He was a 1958 graduate of Cullman High School. Gene left Cullman and came to Pensacola, where he joined the United States Marine Corps and met his wife. Gene loved the Marine Corps and was a staunch supporter of all things Marine. He retired from Gulf Power Company in 1999 after 43 years of service.

Gene was a charter member of the Five Flags Bass Club. He loved fishing and won several trophies for the largest bass. He earned his private pilot certificate from the FAA in 1989. He was a black belt holder in Tae Kwon Do and in 1993 won a third-place trophy in sparring for his age group at the USTA Winter Nationals in New Orleans. He was an avid Alabama University football fan. Gene loved to cook and often shared the fruits of his labor with some of his friends. He was eager to cook for the Community of Christ Church for Wednesday night dinners and other special occasions. He and his wife hosted several fish-fry dinners at their home and invited family, friends and neighbors.

Gene was a very generous and giving person. He hated to see anyone in need and often worked behind the scenes to help the less fortunate. His ministry was giving of himself to help the least of God’s children.

Gene was a member of West Pensacola Masonic Lodge No. 296, Scottish Rite of Freemasonry and Shriners International.

Gene was preceded in death by his parents, Ralph and Lucille Frazier Cook.

He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Jean Tolbert Cook; son, Robert Cook; two brothers, Joe (Rissie) Cook of Hammond, La., and Willis (Dixie) Cook of Tucker, Ga.; four sisters, Betty (Gerald) Aker of Tuscumbia, Ala., Patricia (D’Haifa) Cook of New York City, N.Y., Sandra Butler of Ocean Springs, Miss., and Cora (Charles) Kimbrough of Hendersonville, Tenn.; brother-in-law, Tom (Avis) Tolbert of Pensacola, Fla.; sister-in-law, Betty (Don) Darden of Pensacola, Fla.; aunts, Margie (Willie) Ellis of Jay, Fla., and Ann (Elmo) Fillingim of Molino, Fla.; uncle, Eugene Frazier (Sarah) of East Brewton, Ala.; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins; and several friends mostly from whom he and his wife affectionately referred to as “The Coffee Shop” crew.

The family will receive friends from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m., Thursday at Oak Lawn Funeral Home, with graveside services at 2 p.m. aboard the NAS Pensacola at Barrancas National Cemetery with full military honors.
