Dr. William Eolin Burkett

Dr. William Eolin Burkett , 84, of Warrior passed away Thursday, July 18, 2013.  He was a former superintendent of the Jefferson County School System. He was an ordained Baptist minister serving numerous churches as an interim pastor. He received his BS and MA degree from Memphis State. Also, he was inducted into the Memphis State Sports Hall of Fame. He received his education doctorate from the University of Alabama. The Burkett Center Multi-Handicap School is named for Dr. Burkett. In 1989, he retired from the Alabama Army National Guard with the rank of colonel.  

Dr. Burkett was preceded in death by his siblings: Barbara, Ruth, Pat, Harold and Norman.

He is survived by his wife, Cherrell Burkett; daughters, Pam (Joe) Horton and Jan Gaines; sons, Mike (Ginger), Mark (Leigh) and Bill (Sandy); 12 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and his siblings, Maxine, Charles and James.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday at the New Gardendale Funeral Home. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, July 23, at the funeral home, with burial in Oakwood Memorial Gardens.

The family requests memorials be made to the Burkett Center Multi-Handicap School. New Gardendale Funeral Home is directing.

    Carlton Eugene Stafford, 82, of Cullman passed away Saturday, July 26, 2014, at Cullman Regional Medical Center. He was born April 14, 1932, James and Mary Katherine Brown Stafford. Mr. Stafford was an Air Force veteran of the Korean War. He was the original owner of Carlton’s restaurant.

    Susan Werner died Monday, July 21, 2014, as a result of an apparent fall at her home in Gainesville, Florida. Susan grew up in Jacksonville, Florida, and, after graduation from FSU, spent many years in Cullman, where she taught elementary school and received a master’s degree from UAB. While in Cullman, she married Robert Werner and helped run a family retail business.
