CULLMAN — Melba Jean Phillips McKinney

Melba Jean Phillips McKinney, 77, of the Falkville community passed away Thursday, Feb. 14, 2013. She was born Sept. 22, 1935, in Cullman.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Rev. D.H. and Annie Onilla Veal Phillips; her husband, H.S. McKinney; a daughter, Dianne Brooks; an infant son, Shelton Keith; three brothers, Troy Phillips, Floyd Phillips and George Alvin Phillips; and a brother-in-law, G.C. Graham.

Survivors include two sisters, Irene Graham and Joyce Griggs; two sisters-in-law, Essie Phillips and Sue Phillips; and a host of nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

Melba worked for the A&P Grocery until the business closed. As the store was preparing to close, the A&P manager insisted that Brock Candy Company hire Melba as a candy representative and she was. She told the company they would never hire a better employee. She then retired from Brocks and pursued her interest in antiques by buying an old store front in Falkville and opening the “Whistle Stop Antiques.” She and her husband, H.S., enjoyed this hobby together up until the time of his death. Then she continued until her own health began to fail. Melba had such a kind heart.

There never was a time that you visited her that she didn’t give you the deal of your life. Any of her many friends would testify to this.

Melba was a member of Pilgrim Rest Baptist Church, a little country church in Bethel. This church was started by many of her family and friends. Her faith was very strong, in its own quiet, reserved way. Her eyes teared up many times when she spoke about her Lord and Savior. Her family comes from a rich heritage in the Christian faith. She is now enjoying the company of all those loved ones who went before her.

The family wished to send a special thanks to all those who cared for Melba in her last days here.

Visitation will be from noon to 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 17, at Moss-Service Funeral Home Chapel, with a service at 2 p.m., Randy Milligan officiating, with burial in Etha Baptist Cemetery.
