CULLMAN — Madie Ella Martin Leonard

Funeral services for Madie Ella Martin Leonard, 108, will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 14, 2013, at Seventh Street Baptist Church, with interment in Good Hope Cemetery. The viewing will be from 1 to 2 p.m.

Moss-Service Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Leonard passed away Monday, Feb. 11. She was Cullman County’s oldest resident.

Madie was born Dec. 17, 1904, in Haralson County, Ga., to L.X. and Nancy Martin. She moved to Cullman with her family when she was four years old and has been a resident of Cullman since that time.

Madie was wed to Frank William Leonard Dec. 18, 1929. Madie was a pioneer for Southern businesswomen. In the early 1950s, she joined Frank in opening the Trolley Car Restaurant, a renovated railroad dining car located in downtown Cullman. After selling the restaurant, Madie went on to open The Fashion Shoppe, an upscale dress shop.

Madie was most comfortable in a fine dress, a pair of heels, and a hat. Madie was a devoted member of Seventh Street Baptist Church for almost 70 years.

Madie will be remembered by her family and friends as a loving, giving, and compassionate woman who always put others before herself.

Madie was preceded in death by her husband, Frank; her parents, L.X. and Nancy Martin; her six brothers and three sisters; and a host of friends.

Madie is survived by her nephews, Troy (Elsie) Leonard, Kenneth (Mary) Leonard, Jim (Anita) Martin, Bob (Marrianne) Burrow, Alvin (Myma) Stinedurf, Steve (Barbara) Leonard, Larry (Wanda) Leonard, Wilford Wren, Dalton Wren, Clyde (Espie) Wren and Wilbert Martin; her nieces, Jean (Pete) Daugherty, Gwen (Darrel) Holcombe, Jean (Joe) Musso, Betty Powell, Marlene (Carroll) Nelms, Essie Coppock and Helen Armstrong; her great-nephews, Jock (Teresa) Leonard and Joel Leonard; her great-niece, Juli Leonard; her great-great-nieces, Krista Ella (Matt) Kinsland, Kara Leonard, Grace Leonard, Hope Leonard and Tula Leonard; and a host of friends.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
