CULLMAN — Mary Joyce DeMonia Burke

Funeral services for Mary Joyce DeMonia Burke, 80, of the Ebenezer community, were at 1 p.m. Monday, Dec. 24, 2012, at First Presbyterian Church, the Rev. Terry Tingle officiating, with burial in Good Hope Cemetery.

Moss-Service Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Burke passed away Saturday, Dec. 22, at UAB Medical Center in Birmingham. She was born Nov. 7, 1932, in Cullman to Samuel Cody and Mary Emma Martin DeMonia. Mary was a longtime and very active member of First Presbyterian Church; and worked as a bookkeeper for Ingram Farms for many years. In her later years, she enjoyed working in the “Grandmother Program” at East Elementary School. Her spare time was devoted to her great-grandchildren and friends. Some of her favorite pasttimes were flower gardening, keeping her yard, and working the daily crossword puzzle.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Claud Liles “C.L.” Burke; a son, Charles Steven “Chuck” Whitaker; and nine siblings.

Survivors include a daughter, Kim Michelle (Robert) Stricklin; a stepson, Claud (Sharon) Burke; five grandchildren, Page Michelle (William) Dowdy, Zak Ivey, Judge Liles (Natalie) Burke, Ashley (Milo) Spethman and Daniel (Leslie) Stricklin; and a host of great-grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in her name to First Presbyterian Church.

Visitation was from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday at the church.
