Lavondia E. Hughes

HANCEVILLE — Lavondia E. Hughes

Funeral services for Lavondia E. Hughes, 88, of Hanceville will be at 2 p.m. Sunday, July 21, 2013, at Hanceville Funeral Home Chapel, the Rev. Trueman Davis officiating, with interment in Hopewell Cemetery.

Hanceville Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Hughes passed away Friday, July 19, at her residence. Lavondia was born Feb. 9, 1925, to Henry Leemon Terry Sr. and Madgie Thrasher Terry. She married Clarence A. Hughes Feb. 15, 1941, and they celebrated their 54th anniversary shortly before his death in 1995.

She was a devoted Christian and enjoyed reading and studying the Bible to deepen her faith. As a member of the First Baptist Church in Hanceville, she supported her faith and church by teaching Sunday School and Training Union classes, assisting with Vacation Bible Schools, and in later years serving on the Benevolence Committee.

In addition to being a loving wife and mother, she worked as a doctor’s assistant for Dr. George T. Rowe for 20 years. She enjoyed working as a “nurse” and having an opportunity to help members of the community who were ill.

She spent much of her spare time outdoors working on the lawn, shrubs, and flowers. She also enjoyed picnics with family, church activities, music, and crocheting afghans which she gave to her children, grandson and great-grandchildren.

Always willing to lend a hand, Lavondia will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Henry Leemon Terry Sr. and Madgie Thrasher Terry; her husband, Clarence A. Hughes; three brothers, Carrol Terry, Leroy Terry and Prentice Terry and a brother-in-law, Thomas E. Hughes.

She is survived by two daughters, Vivian Hughes and Mary Beth (Maurice) Blalock; a brother, Henry Leemon “M.L.” (Johnnie) Terry Jr.; grandson, Brian M. (Davette) Blalock; great-grandchildren, Victoria and Lance Blalock; sister-in-law, Ethelene (Earl) Cone; nephews, Michael Cone, Douglas Terry, Mark Terry, Calvin Terry and Greg Terry; and niece, Mindy Patterson.

The family will receive friends from noon to 2 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
