Funeral services for George Gilbert Welch, 86, of Hanceville will be at 2 p.m. Friday, Nov. 6, 2009, at Shelton Grove Baptist Church, Richard Bailey, O’Neal Shelton, Stan Graves and Scott Guthery officiating, with interment with military honors in Shelton Grove Cemetery in Hanceville. The body will lie in state one hour prior to services.
Hanceville Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Welch died Tuesday, Nov. 3, at the Veterans Administration in Tuscaloosa. He was born May 13, 1923, in Lamar County to George A. and Mamie Marie Brandon Welch. He was a member of the US Army during World War II in Europe. He was a longtime deacon for four decades at Shelton Grove Baptist Church.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Earline Welch; three brothers, Clifford L. Welch, Woodrow Welch and Edward Welch and a sister, Catherine Welch.
He is survived by four sons, George T. (Shelia) Welch of Hanceville, Jack G. (Deborah) Welch and Dana O. (Brenda) Welch, both of Cullman, and Ricky K. (Brenda) Welch of Vinemont; two daughters, Margie (Billy) Morgan of Tennessee and Myra (Stan) Graves of Cullman; a brother, Tracy Welch of Hanceville; two sisters, Mary McSwain of Hanceville and Eunice Shelton of Hanceville; 19 grandchildren; and 22 great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Billy Morgan, George Welch, Jack Welch, Dana Welch, Rick Welch and Stan Graves.
Honorary pallbearers will be Jeff Morgan, Chad Welch, Aaron Graves, Tommy Welch, Michael Welch and Chris Welch and grandsons, Aaron, Matthew and James Welch.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
