Eldon Clements Simpson

Graveside services with military honors for Eldon Clements Simpson, 97, of Garden City will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 31, 2009, at Garden City Cemetery.

Hanceville Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Simpson died Wednesday, Oct. 28, 2009, at his residence. He was born Nov. 13, 1911, in Garden City to Bertram Edwin and Bessie Clements Simpson. He was a member of the U.S. Navy and served during World War II. He was a prominent businessman in the Garden City and Hanceville areas since 1937. He owned a rolling store and Simpson Auto Parts, from which he retired at the age of 92. He was well known in the area for riding his bicycle often from Garden City to Hanceville. He rode his bicycle in six states around the Southeast after the age of 75. He was also known for his photography and won several blue ribbons at the Cullman County Fair.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Gertrude Abercrombie Simpson; a brother, Hugh Simpson; and a sister, Wenonah Simpson.

Survivors include a son, Bert (Ginny) Simpson of Winston Salem, N.C.; two daughters, Aloha Bussey of Hanceville and Louise Simpson of Birmingham; five grandchildren, Frederick Bussey, Freda (Mike) Curry, David Bussey, Stephanie (Bob) Keys and Joe Simpson; four great-grandchildren; and a loving pet, Baxter the cat.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Hospice of Cullman County, the Garden City Library, the Muscular Dystrophy Association, or the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Foundation.

Visitation will be from 5:30 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
