Allene Ponder

CULLMAN — Funeral services for Allene Ponder, 88, of Bremen will be at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 14, 2009, at Hanceville Funeral Home Chapel, David Richards, Paul Campbell and Terry Fendley officiating, with interment in Hopewell Cemetery in Hanceville.

Hanceville Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Ponder died Monday, Oct. 12, at Hanceville Nursing Home. She was born Nov. 6, 1920, in Hanceville to George W. and Alta Lowery Grimmett. She was a lifetime member of the PTA and former PTA president, a member of Addington Chapel Church for 60 years, where she attended church conferences. She worked 42 years for the U.S. Postal Service and was a member of the Home Demonstration Club and a faithful Cullman County Democrat Party supporter.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Odis E. Ponder; a sister, Helen Dickerson; and three brothers, Arnold, Bill and Don Grimmett.

Survivors include a son, Fred D. (Jane) Ponder; a daughter, Sherry Stricklin (Bennie) Nail; seven grandchildren, Darrell (Kelli) Ponder, Marc (Brandi) Ponder, Tommy Stricklin, Cindy Benefield, Harlan Stricklin, Jenny (John) Vincent and Janna (Terry) Fendley; 11 great-grandchildren, Meagan (Jamie) Danish, Kristen (Josh) Denney, Jared Vincent, Brittany Stricklin, Jordan Vincent, Paige (B.J.) Moore, Seth Fendley, Bailee Ponder, Jerrica Vincent, Noah Fendley and Paxton Ponder; two great-great-grandchildren, Mallory and Levi Denney; two sisters, Rosa Lee Lynn and Carmen Davidson; and two half-brothers, G.W. (Faye) Grimmett and Wendell Grimmett. 

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
