Dennis Shelton, 77, 4485 Old Asheville Highway, Flag Pond, went home to be with the Lord at 3:12 p.m. Thursday, November 14, 2013, at Johnson City Medical Center surrounded by his loving family.
He was born November 9, 1936 in Madison County, North Carolina, the Shelton Laurel Community, a son of the late Joe and Nellie Hensley Shelton. Mr. Shelton was a retired utility worker for General Motors in Anderson, Indiana. He was a longtime faithful member and Deacon of Sweetwater Church of God. Mr. Shelton was a loving and devoted husband, dad, grandfather, brother and uncle.
Other than parents, he was preceded in death by a great,grandchild; six brothers: Lester Shelton, Fred Shelton, Edd Shelton, Bluferd Shelton, Greenelee Shelton and Richard Shelton; a sister, Wadie French; three brothers-in-law: Lark Hensley, Grady French and Dale Atkinson; four sisters-in-laws, Winnie Shelton, Velma Shelton, Faye Shelton and Mary Lou Shelton.
Mr. Shelton is survived by his loving wife of almost 57 years, Geneva "Hazel" Hensley Shelton; two sons: Ricky Duane Shelton and wife, Kelly, Freetown, Indiana, Dennis Charles Shelton and wife, Pam, Anderson, Indiana; a daughter, Christa Ann Pitts and Sonny Foster, Hanceville, Alabama; nine grandchildren: Zachary Lewis Shelton and wife, Rachel, Kirby Carlin Brooks and husband, John, Aaron Wade Shelton, Andy Shelton and wife, J.B., Bubba Shelton and wife, Angel, Sis Goodman and husband, Michael, Megan Lorenna Wright and husband, Adam, Halee Morgan Pitts, and Alexis Amori Promise Pitts; thirteen great grandchildren; close friend and former son-in-law, Jeff Pitts, Hanceful, Alabama; six brothers: Odell Shelton and wife, Verna Lee, Barnabas Shelton and wife, Frances, all of Erwin, Crate Shelton, Good Hope, Alabama, Arlin Shelton and wife, Margaret, Clifford Shelton and wife, Mary, all of Greeneville, Gerald Shelton and wife, Nancy, Marshall, North Carolina; two sisters: Zelois H ensley, Weaverville, North Carolina and Louise Atkinson, New Castle, Indiana. Numerous nieces and nephews also survive.
Funeral service for Mr. Shelton will be held at 11 a.m. Sunday, November 17, 2013 from the Sweetwater Church of God. Reverend Craig Shelton, Reverend Douglas Pitts and Reverend Bubba Shelton will officiate. Special music will be provided by members of the church. Active pallbearers will be Zachary Shelton, Aaron Shelton, Andy Shelton, Bubba Shelton, Sonny Foster and Jeff Pitts. Honorary pallbearers will be fellow Deaons of Sweetwater Church of God: Edgar Rice, Bill Pate, Ben Brackens and Malone Lewis.
Mr. Shelton will be taken to the church one hour prior to the service.
Interment will follow the funeral service at Elbridge Shelton Cemetery in Shelton Laurel.
The family will receive friends from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Saturday, November 16, 2013, at the funeral home and other times at the family home.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Gideons International for Bible's which will be available at the funeral home.
