Homer E. Grizzard, born July 25, 1919, in Eva, Ala., to Robert O. and Nancy Childers Grizzard, died Friday, Oct. 11, 2013, in Alexandria, Va., surrounded by his family. He grew up in Morgan County, left Alabama to join the U.S. Marine Corps in 1940, live in the Washington, DC, area for over 60 years, where he raised his family and retired from the U.S. Post Office, moved back to Alabama to be near his partner, Marteene, and his brother, Dooley, and returned to Virginia for the last year of his life.
Homer is survived by his daughters, Frances “Bonnie” Kyte of Fairfax, Va., and Ann “Anna” Grizzard of Gaithersburg, Md.; grandchildren, Cynthia “Cindie” Kyte, Lt. Col. James Kyte, USMC (Jennifer), Mairi Brighid Grizzard Durant (Chris), and Meghan Grizzard Baughan (Caleb); and great-grandchildren, Thomas and Robert Kyte, Caitlin Durant, and Jamie, Tommy and Annie Baughan.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Irene Lynch Grizzard; a son, Ronald “Sonnie” Grizzard; and siblings, Arthur Grizzard, Aubrey Grizzard, Gladys Satterfield, Claud “Dooley” Grizzard, Bertha Olson and Jack Grizzard.
Visitation will be from noon to 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 19, at Providence Primitive Baptist Church in Mt. Olive, Cullman, Ala.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at the church, with interment in the church cemetery following.
