Ruby Corrine Sumners
Ruby Corrine Sumners, 102, passed away Saturday, October 5, 2013 at Falkville Healthcare Center in Falkville, Alabama. She was born on April 6, 1911 in Clay County to Charlie Thomas and Janetta Estes Sumners. She graduated from high school in Sylacauga and from Jacksonville State Teachers College in Jacksonville. She spent most of her working life employed by the Social Security Administration and retired from the Birmingham office in 1973. After retirement she volunteered at Montclair Baptist Hospital in Birmingham for 15 years.
She was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters, Mary Reid (Curtis) of Holly Pond and Eunice Wyatt (Lonnie) of Sylacauga; two brothers, George Sumners (Arvie) of Birmingham and Emmett Varner (Christine) of Oxon Hill, Maryland; and a nephew, Walter Reid of Holly Pond.
Survivors include Linda Reid (Walter) of Holly Pond, Joyce Sumners Perry of Santa Rosa Beach Florida, Janetta Wyatt Ball (Charles) of Sylacauga, Larry Wyatt (Kay) of Childersburg, Alabama, Trudy Wyatt Campbell (Calvin) of Talladega, Christine Jean Varner (Emmett) of Hartselle, Sharron Varner Brown of Hartselle, Paul E. Varner (Cindy) of Florence, Carol Varner Cole (Bob) of Winchester, Virginia and a host of great and great-great nieces and nephews.
She was a longtime member of Liberty Baptist Church (formerly Woodlawn Baptist Church) in Vestavia Hills. Funeral services will be held on Monday, October 7, 2013, at 2 p.m. at Curits & Son Funeral Home in Sylacauga, Alabama with Dr. Scott Guffey of Liberty Park Baptist Church officiating. Interment will follow at Evergreen Cemetery in Sylacauga. Visitation will be Monday, October 7, 2013 from 1 - 2 p.m.
