Myrtle Ruby Mize Mann

HARLINGEN, TEXAS — Myrtle Ruby Mize Mann

Myrtle Ruby Mize Mann, 90, of Harlingen, Texas, died peacefully in her sleep March 24, 2014. She always said that she was going to “die in her sleep with her toes turned up,” and God graciously answered her prayer.

Myrtle was born in Cullman, Ala., July 14, 1923, to Alvin and Emily Mize. Living on the old homeplace for most of her life, she relocated to Harlingen, Texas, in 2001. She worked in various places share her cooking expertise, including Cullman Regional Medical Center. Prior to those endeavors, she worked as a nurse aide at Cullman Nursing Home. She loved to cook for her family and friends and was deemed “the greatest cooker in the world,” by great-grandson, Drew.

Myrtle was preceded in death by her parents; her younger brother, Huford Mize; her husband, George Mann; her only child, Brenda Fortner; and her niece, Tiena Henson.

Myrtle, or “Granny” as most called her, is survived by her sister, LaZetta Nuss of Ardmore, Ala.; her grandson, David (Lavonda) Mann of Harlingen, Texas; granddaughter, Janis Morgan of Albertville, Ala.; granddaughter, Shelia (John) Bell  of Albertville; great-granddaughter, Carley Mann of Ft. Worth, Texas; great-grandson, Evan (Carol) Mann of Harlingen, Texas; great-grandson, Elliott Mann of Denton, Texas; great-grandson, Andrew (Rhiannon) Mann of Harlingen, Texas; great-grandsons, Christian Selman and D.J. Slaughter of Albertville; great-granddaughter, Moni Bell; great-grandson, Trint Bell of Albertville; her great-great-grandchildren, Kai, Evlan and Kirk Mann, all of Harlingen; and niece, Melanie (Max) Dailey of Gardendale. She is also survived by a number of beloved cousins, many friends, a number of great-nieces and -nephews; and her beloved “hound” dog, Tootsie.

Myrtle was a lifelong member of Good Hope Baptist Church where she taught the senior ladies Sunday School prior to moving to Harlingen. For years, Myrtle considered it her ministry to provide her church with Sunday morning floral offerings, initially from her own garden. She continued this ministry at Rangerville Baptist Church in San Benito, Texas. After moving to Harlingen, she became a volunteer at Valley Baptist Medical Center and attended the weekly ladies Bible study at Rio Hondo Baptist Church. Additionally, she made teddy bears and dolls to give to needy children at Christmas.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday, March the 27, at Moss-Service Funeral Home, 1901 2nd Ave. NW, Cullman 35055. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Friday, March 28, at Good Hope Baptist Church, Dr. Ralph Andrews officiating, with burial in Good Hope Cemetery.

A memorial service will be at 4 p.m. Tuesday, April 1, at Rangerville Baptist Church in San Benito, Texas, the Rev. Harry Smith officiating. Memorial contributions can be made to Pastor Abele Adioye (Ivory Coast, Africa) through the Good Hope Baptist Church, 90 Good Hope School Road, Cullman, AL 35057.

    Carlton Eugene Stafford, 82, of Cullman passed away Saturday, July 26, 2014, at Cullman Regional Medical Center. He was born April 14, 1932, James and Mary Katherine Brown Stafford. Mr. Stafford was an Air Force veteran of the Korean War. He was the original owner of Carlton’s restaurant.

    Susan Werner died Monday, July 21, 2014, as a result of an apparent fall at her home in Gainesville, Florida. Susan grew up in Jacksonville, Florida, and, after graduation from FSU, spent many years in Cullman, where she taught elementary school and received a master’s degree from UAB. While in Cullman, she married Robert Werner and helped run a family retail business.
