Born in rural Blount County in 1928, Bernice Pauline “Polly” was the eldest daughter of John C. and Fairy Graves Bowers. At 18 years of age, she became an employee of Alabama Power Company, where she diligently served as an accounting supervisor for 42 years. She married Herbert P. “Mac” McAlpine, a veteran of World War II and former fire chief of Tarrant City in 1948, and the couple settled in Center Point. She was an active member of the Energizers Club within Alabama Power and the Camellia Club of Birmingham, where her passion for flowers could be seen at the numerous shows held at the Birmingham Botanical Gardens. She and Herbert enjoyed square dancing with the Guys and Gals Square Dance Club. On weekends, they took trips to Cullman and Blount counties to spend time visiting with family. In 2006, the couple relocated to Hanceville to be closer to the relatives they so loved. After battling poor health for over a year, Polly went home to the Lord, her father, mother, and brothers, Bobby Bowers and two infant brothers on Monday, Feb. 4, 2013.

She is survived by her husband of 64 years, Herbert “Mac” McAlpine; a sister, Madge Kretzschmar; a brother-in-law, Ed (Annie Ruth) McAlpine; three sisters-in-law, D.V. Heptinstall, Lucille Heptinstall and Betty Minor; and a host of nieces, nephews; great nieces and great nephews.

The family will receive friends from 5:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday.
