The success of multiple events in Cullman last weekend proves the area is earning a reputation as a destination.

Celebrate Cullman, returning to downtown after a few years’ absence, and the McKenzie Archery Shooters Association (ASA) Classic, which is considered the super bowl of competitive 3-D archery in the United States, landed thousands of people in Cullman for shopping and entertainment.

The archery tournament included a record 1,900 competitive archers from across the United States.

At the conclusion of the tournament, Cullman Parks & Recreation Department officials who host the event at St. Bernard Abbey, said the reviews of the venue and their experiences in the area from the archers and their families, was extraordinary.

Many of those families will be returning over the next two years because the tournament is under contract through 2019.

Many of the visitors joined with local residents downtown for Celebrate Cullman, an event that formed after the 2011 tornadoes, for a night of live musics, shopping in local stores and many other activities.

The Cullman Area Chamber of Commerce’s 2nd Fridays has also hit a new level of popularity with music, car shows, an artist’s alley and other attractions. The streets are full of people walking through the downtown, shopping and dining.

Many other events are growing, too. Rock the South continues to reach new heights. The Strawberry Festival is enjoying an incredible revival, packing downtown with local residents and visitors.

The Bloomin’ Festival at St. Bernard is a regional draw because of the quality arts and crafts and setting. The city parks and recreation department hosts events that bring large crowds into the area for ball tournaments.

Events have two purposes; they draw visitors and residents together for entertainment and commerce, and they introduce many people for the first time to Cullman.

Those introductions to the area, through well-planned events, are often the foundation for attracting a steady trade in tourism and an opening to new investments.

The planning and determination behind these events are making people take notice of Cullman.

Access to the area is easy because of the interstate and state roads that lead here, but the quality of the events are turning a new page for the community.

We applaud the efforts that are under way to establish Cullman as destination. So many good things are coming together because of an increasing unity among planners and other leaders.

The increase in events is providing opportunities for a lot of people to be involved in promoting their community, and that enthusiasm and pride is showing a positive light to visitors.
