New housing planned along Alabama 157

New residential apartments are slated to go up alongside Cullman’s new fire station on Alabama 157. 

On Monday, the Cullman City Planning Commission granted a conditional use request to developers of apartments to be built next to Merchants Bank, the third fire station and soon-to-be-closed Piggly Wiggly. The planning commission will still have to take up the apartment complex’s site plans before the project can break ground.

Building Inspector Rick Fulmer said the Alabama Department of Transportation has identified one possible driveway for the new apartments on Alabama 157 near where the four lanes join into two as it drops down a hill.

Held public hearing and approved request to vacate right of way at 1816 Teakwood Drive SE. A neighbor expressed concern about losing road access on one side of his property. Fulmer said while the property owner will lose his driveway due to an easement, he will get a new driveway and new street access.

Held public hearing on the 2015 International Building Code.

Approved proposed site plan between First Avenue and Second Avenue Southeast for expanded Boozer Eyecare Associates facility.

Approved proposed site plan for Cullman Shops to be located on two lots across from one another — former Chrysler Dodge dealership and flea market — on Second Avenue Southwest.

Approved proposed site plan and authorized civil engineering work to begin on the northeast parcel at Cullman Shopping Center.

Recommended for approval City of Cullman Utilities Board’s annexation request for land at Swafford Drive Southwest.

Recommended for approval utilities board’s annexation request for site at Eva Road Northeast.

Advised city council the utilities board requested to annex, located on County Road 1305, does not qualify because there’s no point of contact with city limits.

Approved conditional use request for multi-family housing apartment complex on County Road 1402 Northeast.

Reviewed and recommended for approval the 2015 International Building Code.
