Annual fair parade today

— A parade will kick off events for the 56th annual Cullman County Fair at 2 p.m. today.

The fair parade will travel through downtown Cullman, northbound on Highway 31 from 7th Street NW to the North Cullman Shopping Center. The parade route along Highway 31 will be blocked to all traffic for the length of the parade until about 3 p.m..

According to the Lion’s Club — fair organizers — about 200 entrants will meet at the staging area to participate in the parade this year. Entrants include an array of floats sponsored by businesses and organizations in the area, marching bands and cheerleaders from nine area high schools, Miss Cullman County Fair 2009, Little Miss Petite 2009, and the contestants for the Miss Cullman County Fair Pageant 2010.

Mark Aderhold, Lion Club member and organizer of the fair parade, said each of the entrants in the parade pays a $20 entry fee which provides a for a $250 donation to all of the high school marching bands involved.

Fair planning officials expect about 2,500 individuals to be involved in the parade and more than 10,000 spectators.

The fair this year has been promised to, “Quicken the pulses of the young and the young at heart.”

Fair events will begin at the Cullman County Fairground on Sept. 23 and continue until Oct. 2. For the first time since its beginning, the length of the event has been extended to 10 days.

This year fair promoters are offering a MegaPass, which is available for purchase at Merchants Bank and Peoples Bank locations. The pass costs $20 and pays for admission and rides for any given night at the fair. The popular Midnight Madness passes are also available again this year. The passes pay admission and ride fees on one of the two Fridays from 10 p.m. until midnight. Regular admission to the fair for children under 11 years old is free, and $6 for individuals 12 years and older.

Organizers expect about 60 attractions, including over 20 rides at this year’s fair. Events at the fair include the Fair Queen Pageant, livestock shows, and a focus on local performers on various stages.

“We’re just hoping for nice weather and a good turnout this year,” said Jerry Bonner of the Cullman Fair Office. “The fair is a good chance for the community to come together, and for the Lion’s Club to raise money for some of the community services that we do throughout the year.”

According to Bonner, the Lion’s Club has used money from past fairs to sponsor healthcare clinics for people without the funding or insurance to receive treatments.

Beginning tomorrow the Cullman County Fair office will begin accepting canned goods, handmade goods, and art entries for the various judged booths at this year.

The fair this year is sponsored by the Cullman Lions Club, Coca-Cola, The Cullman Times, Merchants Bank, Peoples Bank, and Tri-Green Equipment.
