Child porn suspect had little contact with students while employed with county school system

By Nancy Glassock
The Cullman Times

A former local school system employee facing federal child pornography charges resigned from his job as Cullman County Schools Child Nutrition Program director in 1999, County Schools Superintendent Hank Allen said Wednesday.

Tim Parker, 48, was hired in June as the chief financial officer for the Selma City school system. He was indicted July 31 by a federal grand jury on three counts of child pornography, The Selma Times-Journal reported.

Allen said the FBI contacted the Cullman County Central Office about Parker recently. He said he couldn’t disclose further details of Parker’s resignation because he was not superintendent at the time.

When he was CNP director in Cullman County, Parker was “very seldom” in contact with students, Allen said.

A spokesperson for the FBI confirmed Wednesday that Parker was indicted on three counts of child pornography. The first count allegedly took place on Aug. 17, 2005, in Cullman County, while counts two and three allegedly took place in Jefferson County on Aug. 17, 2005, and May 17, 2006. Parker was arrested Friday at his school board office in Selma, according to The Associated Press.

He was released on $5,000 bond Tuesday with conditions that include electronic monitoring and prohibit him from using the Internet or leaving Alabama, according to The Associated Press.

Ben Given, chairman of the Selma school board, told The Selma Times-Journal the school board did not perform their own background check of Parker, but that he came “highly recommended,” and there was no way they could have known about the pending charges. Allen said to his knowledge, Parker did not receive a recommendation from the Cullman County Central Office.

Former Cullman County Schools Superintendent Jan Farley, who was superintendent when Parker resigned, couldn’t immediately be reached by phone for comment.
