Published May 17, 2006 11:24 pm - Farmer dies in tractor accident By Evan Belanger A man known by neighbors for giving away home-grown produce died tragically Wednesday, when his tractor overturned while he was working in his garden.
According to Coroner Gary Murphree, W. Earnest Griffin, 91, of County Road 1413, was found dead at his home by his daughter Janice Haynes early Monday afternoon. Murphree, who knew Griffin personally, said he had apparently suffered internal injuries in the accident. His body was found near the upended tractor at the bottom of an embankment, just out of sight from the road. "He stayed on that tractor a lot of the time," Murphree said. "You couldn't hold him back." According to neighbor Michael Goidel, Griffin frequently gave food from his garden to those who needed it in his community. "He was a good Christian man," Goidel said. "He stayed very active in his garden and still drove his truck to town every day." Murphree estimated Griffin was dead "a few to several hours" before his body was discovered. In addition to Haynes, Goidel said, Griffin is survived by two sons and a second daughter. His wife preceded him in death.
