Following a lengthy run into the state basketball tournament, Holly Pond’s softball team was finally able to open its season on Monday, getting the 2013 campaign going with a 6-0 shutout over Fairview at home.
Montana Holcombe dazzled for the Broncos, throwing a complete-game one-hitter and striking out 15 batters.
“She threw the ball well,” coach Steve Miller said.
Lacy Malone paced Holly Pond on offense, going 3 for 3 at the plate with two double and two RBI. Katlyn Whitehead also collected three hits, including an RBI double.
Cullman’s boys and girls varsity tennis squads earned darkness-shortened wins over Briarwood Christian on Monday.
The Bearcats’ boys moved to 5-1 on the season after a decisive 7-1 victory over the Lions.
No. 1 Clint Watson and No. 2 Baylor Adams picked up quick 8-2 and 8-0 wins respectively, while teammates Jacob Davis (No. 3) and Matt Davis (No. 5) also collected victories. No. 6 Luke Bowden fell 4-8 for the Bearcats’ lone loss.
Adams and Jacob Davis teamed up for a 10-4 triumph in No. 1 doubles, while Watson and Bowden shone for a 10-2 result at No. 2. Hunt and Matt Davis rounded out doubles play with a 10-4 win at No. 3.
Cullman’s girls could only get in five matches before darkness settled in, but were victorious in four.
No. 3 Olivia Sharpton (8-2) and No. 5 Anna Trevarthen (8-1) garnered two wins in singles play.
No. 1 duo Hannah Cornelius and McKenzie Bussman trailed 1-4 early before rallying back to earn a 10-7 victory in doubles.
Bailey Baker and Sharpton eased away with a 10-2 win at No. 2, while Mary Claire Smith and Makenna Smith dropped a 6-10 decision at No. 3.
The win moves the Bearcats’ record to 6-1 on the season. Both squads will play a home match against Talladega on Saturday at 10 a.m.
Cullman took part in the Dothan Invitational this past weekend and secured a few top finishes.
Baker was the individual tournament champion in the No. 3 spot, taking out an Auburn High player 6-3, 6-3. Baker and teammate Sharpton also garnered a runner-up finish in doubles at the No. 2 post.
On the boys’ side, Hunt and Matt Davis also netted a runner-up finish as the No. 3 seed in doubles play.
Miguel Tizapa and Isaac Rodriguez provided scores for Cullman’s middle school boys in an 8-3 win over Hartselle, while the middle school girls roped in a 1-0 victory versus the Tigers. Ninfa Moreno scored the lone goal, and goalkeeper Ashley Grace Uphold notched the shutout.
The Bearcats’ junior varsity boys fell to Grissom 5-0.
Cullman’s varsity girls will host section-rival East Limestone today at 5 p.m. The Bearcats’ varsity boys will take the pitch against the Tigers at 7 p.m.
% Vinemont 15, Brindlee Mountain 0: Riley Foust was nearly unhittable on the mound, and the Eagle offense did more than enough at the plate to have the Lions begging for mercy on Saturday.
Foust earned the win by striking out six and allowing a single hit and one walk in a five-inning complete-game effort to claim the win.
Lance Stanley was 2 for 3 with three RBI and three stolen bases, while teammates Duncan Hopper and Chasten Beck each contributed two RBI and one hit. Hopper was also good for two stolen bases in the win.
% Vinemont 22, Brindlee Mountain 3: The Eagles continued to feast on the Lions’ pitching in Game 2 of the doubleheader.
Teddy Drake led the way for Vinemont at the plate, notching two hits and three RBI, as well as a stolen base.
Ty Jones pitched five innings, allowing two earned runs on three hits, while striking out five and walking one. The senior also pitched in a two-run double at the plate to go along with two stolen bases.
