Cara Goodwin wasted no time showing why she racked up First Team All-American honors over the offseason, opening up Good Hope’s 2013 campaign on Wednesday at Priceville with a no-hit, 13-strikeout gem.
The UAB signee also led off the third inning with a go-ahead solo home run to propel the Raiders to a 13-0 victory.
Goodwin walked just one batter in seven innings from the pitcher’s circle to miss out on a perfect game. She finished the contest with two hits at the plate.
“We got off the bus and took care of business,” coach Wayne Harris said. “She pitched well, and when they did put the ball in play, they made plays. It was a good opening night.”
Maegan Sterling brought a bit of pop to the plate for Good Hope with two hits, one of which was a three-run double. Kayla Tillman roped a three-run triple, Savannah Fendley pitched in two hits and Kacy Thomas accounted for one base hit.
The 1-0 Raiders are scheduled to play Guntersville and Huntsville at the Holly Pond Invitational on Friday.
