EMERALD COAST GOLF TOUR: Blaich vaults to top of leaderboard after round of 65

CULLMAN — Although cloudy skies and patches of rain threatened to disrupt Day 2 of the Emerald Coast Golf Tournament at TP Country Club, it did little to deter golfers from going out and shooting low scores on Wednesday afternoon.

Seven of the 14 golfers who teed off during round 2 of the event broke par, including the field’s top two players, Chase Blaich and David Miller, both of whom shot outstanding 7-under rounds of 65 on the day.

Blaich started off his birdie barrage early, collecting six of them — as opposed to just one bogey — in his first nine holes to go out with a 31. He went on to post a 34 on his back nine, including an eagle and a birdie on holes 14 and 15, respectively, to climb atop the leaderboard at 9-under (135) heading into the final round.

Meanwhile, Miller was just as good as Blaich, birdieing three of his first five holes to keep pace with his fellow competitor. An eagle on hole 14 and a birdie on hole 18 helped Miller — who’s won two of the past three Emerald Coast events — get to his 7-under mark for the day and 6-under (138) for the tournament.

Day 1 leader Will Dottley followed up his impressive first-round score of 69 with another solid round of 70, leaving him in third place alone just four shots off the lead heading into the final 18 holes.

Rounding out the top 10 includes Zach Sucher (69,142), Patrick Drake (71, 143), Blaise Wilson (67,143), Jordan Anderton (67, 144), Britt Pavelonis (73, 144) and Kyle Sapp (76, 148).

The Cullman Pro-Am Classic was also held on Wednesday.

Sucher’s foursome, which included Joe Cannady, Eddie Cannady and Greg Donnelly, took home first-place honors with a team score of 124, while Drake’s team of Jeff Tifin, Richard McGhee and Mike Lindsey finished four shots back in second place with a total score of 128.

Final round play for the Emerald Coast Tournament will get underway Thursday at approximately 8 a.m.
