PREP FOOTBALL: Warriors no match for Hartselle in 35-7 loss

HARTSELLE — Hartselle enjoyed a hearty homecoming Friday night, cruising to a 35-7 victory over region-foe West Point at J.P. Cain Stadium.

Tiger quarterback Jake Tiffin threw for three touchdowns, D’Andre Mack rushed for 175 yards and a touchdown on 18 carries and Hartselle inched closer to clinching its eighth straight Class 5A playoff berth.

The Tigers (5-2, 3-2 in Region 8) jumped on the board less than three minutes into the game, capping a 65-yard drive with a 3-yard touchdown strike from Tiffin to Zeth Malcom. Jack Waterman added the extra point for a quick 7-0 advantage.

West Point’s Jacob Daniel ruined Hartselle’s next drive, collecting an impressive interception in front of a Hartselle receiver. The Warriors failed to capitalize on the turnover.

Mack carried the load for Hartselle on its second possession of the second quarter. The junior back carried four times for 41 yards, capping the drive with a 1-yard TD plunge. Waterman’s extra point extended the Tigers’ lead to 14-0 with 6:26 remaining in the half.

West Point (2-5, 1-4) was on the verge of only being down 14-0 at halftime, but a costly roughing the punter penalty late extended Hartselle’s drive. The Tigers cashed in three plays later after Tiffin found Malcom across the middle for a 26-yard touchdown.

Hartselle led 21-0 at intermission.

Tiffin threw his third and final touchdown on the Tigers’ opening drive on the second half, hitting Tobias Mitchell for an 11-yard TD.

Bryant Farley scored West Point’s lone touchdown of the game with a 4-yard scoring run with 5:39 remaining in the third quarter. Tristin Skinner added the extra point for the Warriors.

Farley finished 4 of 10 passing for 99 yards with a touchdown and two interceptions. He also added 99 yards rushing.

Tristan Dubberly finished with a combined 105 yards for West Point, collecting 71 receiving yards and rushing for 34.

Ja’mal Jackson capped the scoring for Hartselle with a 32-yard punt return for a touchdown late in the third quarter.

For Hartselle, Tiffin finished 7 of 17 for 82 yards, throwing three touchdowns and one interception. Malcom had 47 yards receiving and 26 yards rushing.

Trent Campbell and Delton Cooke each had a sack for West Point.

West Point resumes region play next week, hosting third-ranked Muscle Shoals.
