PREP FOOTBALL: New Hope handles Holly Pond 40-0

HOLLY POND — Holly Pond coach Mikes Bates saw some of the intensity it takes to win ballgames from his young team Friday night.

For most of the first half, the Broncos hung close to a powerful Indian squad.

But a few turnovers and some dispiriting long runs eventually left Holly Pond on the losing end of a lopsided score.

“As far as the effort goes, it was good. We were competing going into the second quarter, but we’re still fighting the same demons,” Bates said. “We turned the ball over a couple of times, and they broke a couple of long runs.”

Before the turnovers, the Broncos were trailing only 7-0 against a strong opponent. The defensive front for the Green and White was holding the line, and on the offensive side, running back Dustin Pierce was showing his talent.

In fact, Bates said the Broncos never stopped fighting throughout the night.

“We got after them real good for a while, and we never stopped playing hard. I was real proud of some of the work I saw on our offensive line all night,” Bates said. “We also recorded an interception on defense, so we had some positive on the night. We’re getting better, but we’ve got to stop beating ourselves.”

Holly Pond will remain home next Friday to host Sylvania.

“I told the team after the game that we can quit or we can fight,” Bates said. “One of our big tackles said we’re going to fight, and everybody agreed. We’re going to get there.”
