WALLACE STATE FALL INVITATIONAL: Atchley, Lions out in front after 1st round

CULLMAN — The races for the individual and team titles at the Wallace State Invitational were as tight as could be after one round at the Cullman Golf Course on Monday.

But it was ultimately the hometown Lions who were at the front of both, as sophomore Chris Atchley snagged the early lead with a super-low 7-under 65 to help Wallace State’s ‘A’ squad take a two-shot advantage over defending-NJCAA Division I champion Central Alabama.

Central Alabama’s Chase Humber and Tim Walker were one and two strokes, respectively, back of Atchley, who’s Lion teammate, Patrick Twesme, was alone in fourth with a four-under 68.

Brad Gray, of Eastern Florida State College (formerly Brevard Community College) was fifth at 69, while Wallace State’s Cooper Brown and Darrick Fisher both carded 2-under 70s.

Rounding out the Lions’ scores were Aksel Olsen and Jake Miller, 72; Dustin Schultz, 75; and Will McDowell and Ryan Bowie, 77.

Olsen, Brown, McDowell, Atchley and Twesme make up Wallace State’s ‘A’ team, which combined for a 275-stroke total. Preseason No. 1 Central Alabama was right on the No. 8 Lions’ heels with 277. Third-place Darton, 286, and fourth-place Eastern Florida, 287, were the only other schools below par, which is 288.

Results from Monday's second round were unknown at presstime.

The 54-hole tournament is scheduled to wrap up Tuesday. The third and final round will get going with a shotgun start at 8 a.m.
