Cullman's girls tennis team remained flawless on the season and in section play, improving to 3-0 overall and 2-0 in its section after wiping out Scottsboro 9-0 Tuesday on the road.
Hannah Cornelius, the squad's No. 1, led a host of Bearcats earning 10-1 singles victories. No. 3 Olivia Sharpton, No. 4 Bailey Baker and No. 6 Makenna Smith won by the same margin.
Anna Trevarthen dropped only two sets in a win at No. 5, while McKenzie Bussman pulled out a 10-3 decision.
Mary Claire Smith, Kate Hood and Gentry Bussman all easily defeated their foes in exhibition play.
Cornelius and Bussman (10-3 at No. 1), Baker and Sharpton (10-6 at No. 2), and Makenna Smith and Mary Claire Smith (10-1 at No. 3) teamed up for decisive victories on the doubles court. Trevarthen and Hood were 10-2 winners in an exhibition match.
Cullman's girls and boys will head to Arab on Saturday. Play will begin at 10 a.m.
% Vinemont 7, Winston County 3: The Eagles got their sticks working right off the bat, and Duncan Hopper and Braxton Heaton combined for a strong outing on the mound to give Vinemont a season-opening win on Tuesday night.
The Red and White burst out the gates with four runs in the first inning. Teddy Drake drove in Duncan Hopper and Ty Jones with a single shortly after Jones knocked in Riley Foust with his own base hit. Drake later scored on a fielder's choice by Nathan Persall.
Vinemont added two more runs in the sixth inning, one on a triple by Jones and another on a fielder's choice by Drake.
The Eagles crossed the plate on yet another fielder's choice in the seventh, this time by Foust, which brought in Persall.
Hopper was tagged with the win after striking out three and allowing just just three hits and two earned runs in five innings. Heaton lasted two innings on the hill to earn the save. He also K'd three, giving up two hits and the last earned run.
