PREP FOOTBALL: Devils return to form, beats Broncos

HOLLY POND — A new region for second-ranked Cordova High produced the same results.

Junior running back Cody Staten rushed for 181 yards and five touchdowns all in the first half, quarterback Chris Kilpatrick had another effective game in relief of Jake Howton and Cordova rolled to a 49-0 victory Friday night at Thomas-Michael Felder Field.

Cordova, in Region 5 this season after spending the last four years in Region 4, won its 10th consecutive region game and improved to 2-0 on the young season.

Staten and Kilpatrick did most of the damage for the Blue Devils, who scored all 49 points before intermission.

Staten had touchdown runs of 6, 6, 40, 32 and 72 yards, finishing with only eight carries.

“Cody worked on following his fullback more this week in practice and he set out to find him tonight (Friday). Cody followed his blocks from his fullback and his strong offensive line and wound up having a big night,” said Cordova coach Pete Bush.

Kilpatrick was just as efficient, finishing with 83 total yards and a 9-yard touchdown run. He started at quarterback for the second straight week for Howton, who was suffering with a bout of mononucleosis.

“What else can you say about Chris Kilpatrick. This guy is a heck of an athlete. He made no bad reads, whether it was the option or middle play,” Bush said. “Everyone talks about the tremendous baseball player Chris is, but he he’s a heck of an athlete and a pretty good football player. I guarantee you that. Until last week, he hadn’t played quarterback since the eighth-grade. You can’t tell it though.”

Cordova’s defense never let Holly Pond find any rhythm, holding the Broncos (0-2, 0-1 Region 5) scoreless and forcing five turnovers.

Malik Harris capped the scoring for Cordova in the first half with a 73-yard interception return for a touchdown.

Hunter Beaird and Wesley Minor each had a pair of sacks in the first half, Andrew Minor and Josh Pruitt added one apiece and Bryan Thomas picked off a pass.

For Holly Pond, receiver Austin Hoffman hauled in three passes for 65 yards.

Kyle Sansing had a fumble recovery on defense.

“The last time we saw Cordova the roles were completely different. We were having a strong year and they were rebuilding,” said Holly Pond coach Nate Ayers. “The roles are now reversed. Cordova has been super successful the last three or four seasons. Success has got to start somewhere and I promise it’s starting here. We will be successful. We’re going to work hard every day and like I tell the guys we are going to forget this one and drive on.”

Holly Pond hosts county rival Hanceville next Friday in another region affair.

Cordova hosts Vinemont next week at Hudson-Kirby Field.

“Every region win is a big one. Our guys are working hard. We’ve got a lot of guys playing different positions and some still out,” Bush said. “It’s all about finding the right mix, finding the right ingredients and keep mixing and gelling together. I feel by the fourth week we should have that right mix.”
