DECATUR — Wallace State Community College is in 10th as a team, and a former Cullman High golfer is four shots off the lead after the first round of the 44th annual Spirit of America Amateur Golf Classic.
The Lions’ Deane Rikard is tied for fifth after carding a 1-under 70 Thursday at the Burningtree Country Club in Decatur, only one stroke ahead of Jake Tucker, a Bearcat graduate and current member of Troy University’s golf team. The two are well within reach of Auburn University’s Will McCurdy, who sits alone at the top of the leaderboard at 4-under.
Rounding out Wallace State’s representatives at the 72-hole event were Jake Miller, 2-over 73; Chris Atchley, 4-over 75; Walker Edmonson and Robert Rikard, 7-over 78; and Chandler Russ, 13-over 84.
A trio of other past and present golfers from the area were also in contention, including Kolby Hamrick, 4-over 75, as well as Blaise Wilson and Conner Godsey, 8-over 79.
The field will be cut after today’s second round, and the tournament will conclude Sunday.
