PREP BASKETBALL: Bronco boys debut at No. 2 in 3A of ASWA's 1st rankings; 3 other local teams in top 5

CULLMAN — Holly Pond’s boys and girls, Hanceville’s boys and Cold Springs’ girls received top-five rankings in the Alabama Sports Writers Association’s first release of the prep basketball season late Wednesday night.

The Bronco boys, 8-3 with a pair of losses to Class 5A Cullman and one to Cold Springs, were the highest local team in any respective classification with the No. 2 spot in 3A. The Green and White, who are seeking a second straight state tournament appearance, are sandwiched between top-ranked Midfield (5-3) and No. 3 Madison Academy (3-2).

Not far down are the Bulldogs in the No. 5 position. Superstar Brontae Harris has helped Hanceville open with a 7-4 record. While two of those losses have come against fellow 3A opponents (Holly Pond and Vinemont), the other pair were handed out by 4A Dora and 5A West Point.

Cold Springs, currently riding a three-game win streak that includes an impressive 82-80 victory over Holly Pond, debuted at No. 8 in 2A. Sophomore sensation Triston Chambers, who put up 43 points against West Point and 39 in the latest matchup with the Broncos, has had a heavy hand in the Eagles’ 8-4 start.

Cold Springs (9-4) also cleaned house in the lady’s department, grabbing the third spot in the 2A rankings behind only Woodland (3-0) and North Sand Mountain (6-0). Two of the Eagles’ losses came at the Lady Hawks Thanksgiving Classic against the top teams in 5A (Brewer) and 4A (Oneonta).

The other pair of defeats were doled out by Holly Pond, which was penciled in for fourth in the 3A rankings. The Lady Broncos have so far followed up last season’s magical journey to the state championship game by cruising to a 9-2 record. Their only losses were to Austin, the No. 10 team in 6A, and 4A Oneonta at Danville’s Thanksgiving tournament.

Good Hope’s girls, which have rebounded from a sluggish 3-4 start with four consecutive wins, were among five teams nominated in the 3A portion.
