St. Bernard laid it all on the line on Saturday but ultimately fell short, losing 4-1 to Class 3A Madison Academy in the first round of the playoffs.
The defeat ended a successful season for the Lady Saints, who were 7-5-2 overall.
“They just outdid us,” coach Shannon Mescher said. “Their goalkeeper was really experienced. We’re young, though.”
Aimme Cortes scored St. Bernard’s lone goal.
Although Mescher would’ve obviously liked to see her squad’s season extend just a bit further, she’s still proud of this year’s group of girls.
“They were amazing,” she said. “I don’t know if we’ve ever made it past area as a team in school history. I told them after the game, ‘You gotta start somewhere.’ I’m really happy with the season and how they played.”
With only one departing senior, Savanna Glover, the Saints will look to build on this season’s momentum and take their program to the next level in 2014.
“We have no place to go but up,” Mescher said.
