The Cullman baseball team is 3-1 on the young season after splitting a pair of games in Gadsden on Saturday.
The Bearcats started the day with a 5-2 win versus hosting Southside and ended it with a nine-inning 7-5 loss to Russell County.
Jordan Guthrie hurled his second complete-game victory in as many contests in the opener against the Panthers. The lefty struck out two in the seventh inning to up his final total to eight.
Lance Cleveland was 3 for 4, slugging two doubles and an RBI single. Wesley Walker put Cullman up for good with a two-run single in the top of the third. Cole Collins was responsible for two hits and two runs in four at-bats.
The Bearcats were unable to best Russell County in an extra-inning affair despite an exceptional outing by Keegan Thompson on the mound and at the plate.
The national prospect was 3 for 4 with two doubles and a solo home run, his third blast in four games.
Thompson racked up seven strikeouts in four innings of one-hit relief after Sam Huser allowed two earned runs in three innings as the starter. Cleveland was charged with the loss after giving up a two-run single in the top on the ninth.
Walker kept his batting average above .400 on the season with two hits and an RBI, Cleveland knocked in two runs with a double and Collins roped a bases-loaded single to bring in a run.
Cullman will travel to Georgia for games against Eagles View and Grayson on Friday, as well as a matchup versus Callaway on Saturday.
Cullman's boys continued to make it look easy with their second section victory and third overall in a 9-0 road rout of Arab on Saturday.
The Bearcats eased through singles with wins by all six players — No. 1 Clint Watson (6-3, 6-0), No. 2 Baylor Adams (6-1, 6-1), No. 3 Jacob Davis (7-6, 6-2), No. 4 Ryan Hunt (6-0, 6-0), No. 5 Matt Davis (6-3, 6-4) and No. 6 Luke Bowden (6-0, 6-0).
The were also flawless in their three doubles matches — No. 1 Watson/Adams (6-1, 6-0), No. 2 Jacob Davis/Bowden (6-1, 6-1) and No. 3 Hunt/Matt Davis (6-1, 6-0).
Cullman's girls stayed undefeated as well, improving to 3-0 in section play and 4-0 overall with a 7-2 decision over the Knights.
The Bearcats received victories on five singles courts — No. 2 McKenzie Bussman (6-0, 6-3), No. 3 Olivia Sharpton (4-6, 6-3, 6-2), No. 4 Bailey Baker (6-1, 6-0), No. 5 Anna Trevarthen (6-2, 6-3) and No. 6 Makenna Smith (6-4, 6-3) and two doubles courts — No. 2 Baker/Sharpton (6-3, 6-1) and No. 3 Makenna Smith/Mary Claire Smith (7-6, 6-4).
Hannah Cornelius was defeated for the first time since taking over at No. 1 in singles (4-6, 3-6). Cornelius and Bussman also dropped their first match in No. 1 doubles with a three-set (6-4, 1-6, 2-6) battle against Arab's top players.
Both Cullman squads were scheduled to host Huntsville on Monday and travel to Guntersville on Tuesday.
