HANCEVILLE — Top-ranked R.A. Hubbard opened Class 1A play at the Northwest Regional Tournament with a convincing 73-56 victory over Berry Tuesday at Wallace State.
Five Chiefs — Alexis Acosta (15), Ashlen McCoy (14), Alexandria Gholston (14), Oresha Sherrod (12) and Zena Harris (11) — were double-digit scorers.
That balanced attack allowed them to overcome a stellar 34-point performance by the Wildcats' Emma Herren. The junior guard was 13-of-25 from the field, including 4-of-6 from the 3-point line. She had 22 points by halftime.
Acosta pulled off a double-double by grabbing 11 rebounds to go with her 15 points.
Berry's second-leading scorer was Rayanna Clark, who had seven points.
R.A. Hubbard beat the Wildcats 72-49 in last year's Northwest Regional Final.
Lynn 44, Tharptown 25: Reagan Tittle led the Bears with 14 points as they earned a date with top-ranked R.A. Hubbard in the finals on Friday.
Nine of her points came from behind the arc.
Lynn outscored Tharptown 12-2 to begin the game and led by as many as 16 at one point during the second quarter. However, the Wildcats cut into the lead just before the half to trail 24-14 heading into the locker room. That would be as close as Tharptown would get as Lynn cruised the rest of the game.
Tittle's teammate, Jackee Dodd, chipped in with 13 points while pulling down eight rebounds.
Kamri Sears had 13 points while grabbing 10 rebounds to lead Tharptown.
The 1A girls region title game will be Friday at 3:40 p.m.
Boys
Pickens County 88, R.A. Hubbard 46: The Tornadoes moved one step closer to their goal of playing for a three-peat Tuesday evening as they ran away from the Chiefs in one of two Class 1A boys Northwest Regional Tournament games.
Top-ranked Pickens County (26-5) scored 34 points in the first quarter while holding the Chiefs to 13. R.A. Hubbard (22-5) was never able to recover.
Nicholas Stewart was the driving force in the Tornadoes’ victory, scoring a team-high 21 points. De’Marko Hall tossed in 15 points, followed by Warren Betts with 14. Bobby Bradford contributed 13 points. He also had eight steals.
For the Chiefs, Paul Mason had eight points.
Marion County 69, Decatur Heritage 59: After a back-and-forth third quarter, the Red Raiders used a 9-2 advantage to open the final period of play. In the end, that would be all they needed as they defeated the Eagles to earn a spot in Friday's Northwest Regional Tournament championship game.
Decatur Heritage made a late surge midway through the fourth on a 5-0 run sparked by Braden Ladner, who made back-to-back baskets to make it 60-57. Free throws down the stretch helped the Red Raiders seal the deal.
Marion County had three players finish in double figures. Dorryl Swannigan scored a team-high 24 points and recorded nine rebounds to lead the team to the win. DeShawn Riebeschl added 21 of his own. Sean Wallace contributed 14 points and 11 rebounds.
Boban Picnic recorded a double-double for Decatur Heritage, tallying 20 points and 10 rebounds. He also had four blocked shots. Grant Gill chipped in with 16 points and seven rebounds for the Eagles.
The Class 1A boys regional title game will be Friday at 5:20 p.m.
