DECATUR —
Deane Rikard continued to move up the leaderboard at the 44th annual Spirit of America Amateur Golf Classic with a second-round 3-under 68 Friday at the Burningtree Country Club in Decatur.
The Wallace State golfer is in second place at 4-under after 36 holes, only three strokes back of Auburn University’s Will McCurdy, who followed up Thursday’s 67 with a solid 68.
Troy University’s Jake Tucker, a Cullman High graduate, began the day at even-par and overcame a rocky start to finish tied for fourth after carding a 1-under 70. He was 2-over through 11 holes Friday but rebounded with three birdies before entering the clubhouse.
Rikard and Tucker are two of only seven golfers heading into the weekend with sub-par scores.
The 150-man field was cut down to 50 following Friday’s action.
Former Wallace State golfers Blaise Wilson, a Bearcat graduate, and Conner Godsey were among those still in contention. Wilson is tied for 25th at 4-over after shooting a second-round 4-under 67. Godsey just barely snuck in at 7-over, which has him in a nine-way tie for 49th.
Wallace State’s Jake Miller also finished the first two days at 7-over, keeping him alive for another 36 holes.
The results for the Lions’ other golfers are as follows: Walker Edmonson, 10-over (78-74); Chris Atchley, 20-over (75-87); Robert Rikard, 21-over (78-85); and Chandler Russ, 28-over (84-86).
Kolby Hamrick finished at 17-over. He shot a 75 on Thursday and 83 on Friday.
