Although Monday’s rain washed away a couple of local golf tournaments, three prep teams were able to contend with the subpar weather long enough to complete their sub-state rounds at The Robert Trent Jones Trail at Silver Lakes.
In Class 3A, Good Hope took home a fourth-place finish with a team score of 347. Holly Pond was right behind in fifth, carding a cumulative score of 348. White Plains earned the top spot with a team score of 326.
The Broncos’ Colby Adams (76) and the Raiders’ Eli Marty (77) were the lone Cullman County golfers who qualified as individuals for next week’s state tournament in Muscle Shoals.
“Colby had an outstanding round for us,” Holly Pond coach Mark Cornelius said. “It was cold and damp. The conditions were terrible. He had a great day. I’m really pround of him.”
Added Good Hope coach David Hulsey: “Eli’s goal this year was to make state. I think he’s disappointed a little bit because he knows he can shoot better, but I’m pretty happy with it considering the adverse conditions.”
Joining Marty was Cole Peason (84), Kainan Smith (85) and Anthony Harlan (101).
The Raiders’ finish will mark the first time in 16 years the program hasn’t qualified for the state tourney as a team.
“The way we looked it after is hopefully we can start a new streak next year,” Hulsey said. “Streaks are made to be broken. We have a young team. If we can add some pieces, I think we will be fine. All in all, I’m pretty pleased with the effort in this tournament and all season.”
Braden Walker dished out a round of 85 for the Broncos, while Hunter Walker (87) and Dawson Foust (100) also helped contribute to the top-five finish.
“Our juniors were outstanding leaders this year,” Cornelius added. “Overall, it was a great season for us.”
Over on the Class 4A side, Kurt Knight’s Fairview squad placed fifth with a team score of 355. Trey Hanvey fired a 78, missing out on an individual playoff by just one shot. Seth Lancaster was next in line with a round of 86, while Austin Scott and Cody Lackey were good for rounds of 92 and 99, respectively.
Guntersville won top honors with a score of 310.
