PREP SOCCER: Lady Saints warm up for playoffs with 3-2 win at Columbia

HUNTSVILLE — The Lady Saints applied one coat of primer Tuesday night. Now there's just one more to lay down before what they hope will be a big, big finish.

Following a two-week stretch away from the pitch, St. Bernard's girls soccer squad traveled to Columbia for its second-to-last game of the regular season. The Saints headed back home with a 3-2 triumph, leaving Thursday's match at Decatur Heritage as the only speed bump on their way to the playoffs.

St. Bernard will get the postseason started with a sub-state showdown Saturday at Westminster Christian in the first round of the Class 1A-4A bracket.

Sophomore Jillian Ivey broke a scoreless tie 10 minutes into Tuesday's contest when an unexpected long shot screamed over the keeper's head and into the net. Abbie Mescher accounted for the Saints' other two goals, the highlight a penalty kick that banked in off the post, to help stave off a Columbia comeback bid that included an own goal by St. Bernard.

The boys matchup, the Saints' last of the season, was marred by an injury to Landon Skinner. St. Bernard ultimately couldn't overcome the goalkeeper's early exit in a 4-2 loss.
