As seniors, there’s no better way to finish your last home meet than in first place — and that’s exactly where the fearsome foursome of Mark Gomez, Matt Huddleston, Devan Hall and Stephen McNeal wound up in the 4x800-meter relay at Thursday’s Cullman/St. Bernard Pre-Sectional Invitational.
The relay result, as well as a pair of individual victories by Gomez (1,600- and 3,200-meter runs) and a win by Garrison Hill in the pole vault, launched Cullman to the team title. The Bearcats’ 123-point total put the Black and Gold nine points ahead of second-place Tanner.
Savannah L. Smith, who signed with Montevallo earlier in the week, snagged the top spot in the javelin en route to a runner-up finish for Cullman’s girls.
St. Bernard’s Ayleana Mami paced herself to a victory in the 1-mile run. The Saints also received a win from Logan Ayers, Jaden Edge, Leahrose Mami and Morgan Matz in the 4x800-meter relay.
Vinemont’s Tori Wisner and Alex Pettus finished first in the shot put and discus, respectively, while Holly Pond’s Melissa Clingman and Megan Barksdale were unbeatable in the 100-meter hurdles and 400-meter dash.
On the boys’ side, Vinemont’s Tyler Boland roped in his latest triple-jump triumph, and Hanceville’s Sheldon Lewis outmuscled the competition in the discus and shot put.
St. Bernard’s Will Faulk was victorious in the 800-meter run. Holly Pond’s Chris Whitehead bested the field in the javelin.
