More than 40 local runners qualify for state cross country meet
Staff ReportsCOLD SPRINGS — More than 40 local runners qualified for the state cross country meet Thursday at the 1A-3A Section 3 meet, which was held at Cold Springs High.
Runners could qualify two ways. Every athlete from the top three teams in each race qualified, while individuals with the best times also reached state.
The runners were divided into 1A-2A and 3A races.
Cold Springs took first place in the boys and girls 1A-2A team standings. St. Bernard Prep finished third in both races.
In the 3A race, runners from Holly Pond, Good Hope and Vinemont qualified individually.
Holly Pond’s Kevin Adams won the 3A boys race with a time of 19:06, while Cold Springs’ Palee Myrex won the 1A-2A girls race with a time of 20:15. Cold Springs’ Nathan Lewis won the 1A-2A boys race with a time of 16:00.
Other local top-five finishers included St. Bernard’s Ayleanna Mami, who finished third in the girls 1A-2A race, and Cold Springs’ Olivia Calvert and Emily Campbell, who were fourth and fifth, respectively, in the same event.
Good Hope’s Nina Mills took fourth in the 3A girls race.
In the boys 1A-2A race, Cold Springs’ Nick Lewis and Blake Calvert finished second and fourth, respectively, while St. Bernard’s Will Faulk took fifth.
All 70 runners in the boys and girls 1A-2A races qualified for state.
The state meet will be held Nov. 14 at Indian Mounds Park in Oakville.

Heading into its Class 5A quarterfinal tonight at Russellville, Cullman High’s football team has already avenged two of its three losses from the 2008 season.
In week six, the Bearcats beat Erwin 42-16 to avenge a 25-20 loss from last season. And in week eight, Cullman downed Mountain Brook 28-13 to get revenge for last year’s 49-34 defeat.
Guess who the third target is. -
