CULLMAN — Holly Pond’s Colby Adams, Good Hope’s Andy Cofer and Cold Springs’ Haley Freeman are not only exceptional athletes but top-notch scholars, too.

Combine both characteristics, and what do you get? A trio of 2014 Bryant-Jordan Student Athlete Program regional winners, according to an Alabama High School Athletic Association press release sent out Friday.

Adams, representing Class 3A, was among the 48 recipients of a Scholar-Athlete Award, while Cofer (3A) and Freeman (2A) were two of the state’s 48 seniors selected to receive a Student-Athlete Achievement Award.

Each student selected was nominated by their respective high schools. A committee of school principals chose the area winners, and a committee of school administrators in each region then picked the regional victors. The overall and class winners will be determined by a statewide committee comprised of school administrators and business leaders.

The whole lot of honorees will be recognized at the annual Bryant-Jordan Banquet April 14 in Birmingham. Each regional winner will be given a $2,500 scholarship, with an extra $3,000 going to class winners.

Regional winners are also eligible to receive several other scholarships that will be doled out by 14 Alabama four-year colleges and 14 Alabama community colleges participating in the program, which began in 1986 as a project of the Alabama Sports Hall of Fame and the AHSAA.
