PREP FOOTBALL: Yellow Jackets trounce Cold Springs

COLD SPRINGS — Cold Springs was back in front of its home crowd Friday night, hosting Aliceville. The Eagles were looking to pick up their first region win, but they will have to wait a bit longer after falling to the Yellow Jackets in a 63-12 blowout.

After the game, Cold Springs coach Rod Elliott said he thought his team was “still in it before the half” but felt Aliceville just wore down the Eagles in the final two quarters.

The Yellow Jackets (3-1, 3-0 in Class 2A Region 4) got on the board with only 59 seconds off of the clock when Jocarious Spruill connected with Cody Davis on a 26-yard pass.

Aliceville then forced Cold Springs (1-3, 0-3) to fumble away its first possession and scored again two plays later when Spruill completed a 39-yard pass to Joe Robinson for 39 yards.

Following the pair of quick strikes by the Yellow Jackets, the Eagles settled down and finally put together a 17-play, 61-yard drive, eating away 7:59 off of the clock. Logan Campbell found Vince Stewart for a 24-yard touchdown strike and added a little spark for the home team to trail 14-6 at the end of the first.

Austin Moore made the spark much brighter when he recovered an Aliceville fumble on the ensuing kickoff. Cold Springs made the most out of the short field, as Campbell located a wide-open Caleb Ellison for 17 yards on fourth-and-5, setting up a 1-yard run by Ellison.

The Yellow Jackets answered back, scoring two more times late in the second quarter and completely extinguished all the sparks that Cold Springs had made. Robinson made a 32-yard grab, and Jeremy McMullen had a 1-yard run for Aliceville and lead 28-12 at the half.

It was all Yellow Jackets in the second half, scoring five touchdowns, three of which came in the third quarter. Dalvin Williams had a 19-yard reception, and McMullen had two scoring carries from 31 and 20 yards.

In the fourth quarter, eighth-grade quarterback Santiago Taylor connected with S.J. Washington for 97 yards and Jamar Richardson for 43 yards for the final two scores.

“We need to stay in control,” Aliceville coach Charles Moody said. “We cannot allow the game to get out of hand. We must learn to stay focused. Our focus changed after the break.”
