PREP BASKETBALL: Myrex, Cold Springs’ girls win big

Boys lose heartbreaker to ACA

COLD SPRINGS — Abby Myrex isn’t one to usually fist pump after making a big shot or show much emotion after her team makes a big run against an opponent.

However, Monday night, in Cold Springs Class 2A, Area 11 championship game, the senior made an exception during their 80-39 win over Sumiton Christian.

“Ka-Ka (Crider) and I were on the state championship team that won two years ago, and playing in the area tournament brings back those memories,” Myrex said. “So when someone hits a shot, it just feels like it brings us one step closer to reliving that.”

Cold Springs jumped out to an early first quarter lead and cruised the rest of the game as they held a 33-point advantage at the end of three. Myrex was the driving force behind that, leading the team with 21 points, six rebounds and four steals.

“This was my second-to-last home game and I knew if we didn’t play well that I wouldn’t have another chance to play in front of a home crowd,” she said. “I knew I needed to step up and show the yonger ones how to be a leader so they’ll have something they can carry on the next few years.”

Courtney Attaway follwed Myrex with 13 points for Cold Springs in the win, while Chloe Harbison chipped in with 12. Crider added nine. Hayden West contributed seven points and seven rebounds.

With the win, Cold Springs will host Sulligent in the sub-regional round at 7 p.m. Thursday.

American Christian Academy 68, Cold Springs 55: The Patriots jumped out to an early 8-0 run to begin the game, which proved to be all they needed as they defeated the Eagles for the Class 2A, Area 11 title.

ACA led 32-21 at the half and 47-39 at the end of three before Cold Springs made a run of their own and trimmed the lead to two in the opening minutes of the fourth quarter with a 7-0 run.

That would be as close as the Eagles would get as the Patriots responded with a 7-0 run to pull away for the victory.

“I thought we played hard from start to finish, but the shots just didn’t go in for us,” Cold Springs’ coach Tim Burleson said. “I thought we were in good shape when we cut the lead to two in the fourth quarter, but give ACA credit for answering that in a tough environment.”

Cold Springs was led by Chayse Elliot in scoring with 21 points. Colton Henderson added 17 for the Eagles. Layne Rice had nine.

Despite the loss, Cold Springs advances to the sub-regional tournament where they will face Red Bay on the road at 7 p.m. Friday.
