PREP ROUNDUP: Bearcats open season with top 5A score at Blue-Gray Invitational

MONTGOMERY — With rain wiping out the first round of the 21st annual Blue-Gray High School Invitational on Monday, Cullman’s boys golf team had to wait a day to get its season started.

The Bearcats made the delay worth their while, finishing ninth out of 26 teams in the weather-shortened event with a combined 18-hole score of 321, the lowest out of all participating Class 5A squads.

Sylas Elliott carded Cullman’s best score in Tuesday’s round at the Lagoon Park Golf Course in Montgomery with a 4-over 76. Colby Sandlin was next up with an 8-over 80, followed by Conner Stevens, 10-over 82; Lee Mattox, 11-over 83; and Garrett Crider, 27-over 99.

“Considering all the elements and it being the first tournament of the year, I was proud of the guys,” assistant coach Ches Harris said.

The Black and Gold boys will compete in a nine-hole match next Tuesday in Decatur.
