HANCEVILLE — Wenonah's girls came up with all the big shots when they needed them most, taking over in the fourth quarter to punch the Northwest Regional Tournament's first ticket to Birmingham with a 46-36 victory over Fairfield in Friday's Class 5A championship at Wallace State.
The Dragons (28-6) held a slim one-point lead at the end of three quarters but outscored the Tigers 21-12 in the final frame to leave the Tom Drake Coliseum with the title.
No. 4 Wenonah's Kaitlyn Rodgers, a 6-foot-2 freshman, had her second double-double of the week with 16 rebounds and 10 points to cap off an All-Regional MVP performance. Shauntece Catlin, 15 points, and Aja Cumbie, 12, were other Dragons selected for the All-Regional Tournament Team.
Ashley Rodgers scored 14 points for No. 7 Fairfield (22-9). Amber Carey had 11. Both were also picked for the 5A honorary squad, which was rounded out by Athens' Alliyah Smith and Lawrence County's Adrien Coffey.
% Hoover 47, Sparkman 33: Marqu'es Webb played a determined fourth quarter, allowing the defending 6A champs to impeach the No. 1 Senators and hand them their first loss of the season.
Webb made her biggest impact in the clutch, coming through with nine of her game-high 15 points in the last eight minutes. The 6-foot-1 senior center completed the double-double with 16 rebounds, making Webb the easy pick for All-Tournament MVP. Breigha Wilder-Cochran, nine points and five rebounds, accompanied her No. 3 Buccaneer (26-4) teammate on the All Tournament Team.
Alexis Jennings battled back on to the court for Sparkman (33-1) after an apparent knee injury in the third quarter. She finished with 13 points, earning a spot on the All-Tourney squad with teammate Toni Brewer, who had eight points and five rebounds.
Austin's Takisha Jordan was the final player named to the honorary squad.
