Wallace State’s nationally ranked volleyball team was busy over the Labor Day weekend.
The Lions split four matches at the Pensacola (Fla.) State Invitational, winning against Labette (Kan.) Community College and Andrew (Ga.) College, while losing to Pensacola State and Florida State-Jacksonville.
Freshman Bethany Johnson paced the way in a 25-17, 25-11, 25-18 victory over Labette with a team-high 17 kills and added six digs.
Montana Clark finished with 15 kills and 12 digs, Kianna Delaney had 10 kills, four digs and three blocks, Taylor Traglia contributed 33 assists, Nicole Penny had 13 assists and Rosemary Wendel had 22 digs.
Wallace State (7-3, 1-0 ACCC) defeated Andrew College 25-10, 25-8, 25-3 behind Delaney’s 13 kills, eight digs and three blocks. Kaci Kirk collected 14 assists and two digs in the win, Traglia finished with 13 assists and two digs, and Olivia Walker had seven digs and five kills. Johnson added four kills.
Johnson combined for 34 kills and three blocks in the losses to Pensacola State and Florida State-Jacksonville. Delaney had 23 kills and 20 digs combined, BreAnna Thompson finished with 20 kills, Penny collected 36 assists, Traglia had 26 assists, Clark added 14 kills and Wendel had 26 digs.
Before traveling to Florida, Wallace State recorded a victory at Jeff Davis in the team’s Alabama Community College (ACCC)/Region 22 opener, winning 25-12, 25-12, 25-11.
Johnson had 13 kills and 6.5 blocks against the Warhawks, Delaney had 11 kills, Kirk finished with 13 assists, Payton Norris added 10 digs, and Traglia, Norris, Johnson and Delaney each had two assists.
Wallace State traveled to Southern Union last night and will head to Faulkner State Thursday. The Lions’ conference home opener is set for Sept. 11 vs. Southern Union.
