Good Hope yielded three runs to Class 5A, No. 2 Lawrence County in the sixth inning to drop a 3-1 decision on Friday at the Wallace State Tournament in Heritage Park.
The Raiders’ Cara Goodwin pitched all six innings, allowing three runs on six hits, while striking out 12 batters.
Good Hope took a 1-0 lead in the top of the sixth when Bailie Andrews singled home Kayla Tillman, who doubled earlier in the frame.
Unfortunately for Wayne Harris’ group, it was unable to hold on for the victory.
Andrews led the way at the plate for the Raiders with two hits and an RBI. Tillman and Goodwin added one hit each.
% Good Hope 6, Oneonta 4: Tillman led off the game with a home run to jumpstart the Raiders’ offense in a three-inning victory over the Redskins on Friday.
Tillman, Alannah Henke and Andrews all collected two hits apiece for Good Hope in the win. Darcie Wilson, Kacy Thomas and Goodwin were each good for one.
Goodwin scattered seven hits and four strikeouts over 2 2/3 of an inning and Josie McDonald notched the final out to pick up the save for the Class 3A, No. 7 Raiders (7-2).
Prep Golf
Cullman’s varsity and junior varsity boys teams won their respective matches against Fairview, West Point, Brewer and Brindlee Mountain on Friday at the Cullman Golf Course. The competition was shortened to six holes because of darkness.
Lee Mattox led the Bearcats’ varsity squad at 2-over, while Sylas Elliott and Conner Stevens were close behind at 3- and 4-over, respectively. Garrett Crider finished 9-over, and Penn Kennedy was 14-over, giving Cullman a team total of 18-over.
The Aggies were in second 13 shots back, followed by Brewer (56-over), Brindlee Mountain (57-over) and West Point (65-over).
Cullman’s JV boys’ score of 27-over was 40 shots better than second-place Brewer’s. Fairview was third, and the Aggies were fourth. Brindlee Mountain did not field a JV team.
Local Running
E.C. Gibbs won the inaugural Trails of St. Bernard Half Marathon early Saturday morning, besting a rather large field with a 13.1-mile time of 1:25.43.
The former Cullman High and Georgia Tech track star, who now lives in Huntsville, received $150 for the victory, as did Elkmont’s Emily Spry, who took the top overall female honor with a time of 1:43.14.
Dink Taylor, of Huntsville, wrapped up the masters (40-and-over) male division and a prize of $100 by finishing in 1:29.48. The masters female winner was Hartselle’s Ericka Davis (2:14.26).
Local runner Duane Ricketts was the grandmasters (50-and-over) male champ (1:37.59), while Susan Methvin, of Loretta, Tenn., earned the title for the women with a time of 2:05.07.
St. Bernard cross country and track and field coach William Calvert said 76 participants started the first-time race with 72 of them crossing the finish line. He added he plans to organize the event again next year.
