DANVILLE — Brrrrrring, brrrrrring.

“Hello?”

“Hey, this is the playoffs. May we speak to St. Bernard's girls soccer team?”

The Saints are more than welcome to answer that call from the postseason after clinching a sub-state contest with a gritty 2-1 road win over Danville on Monday.

Logan Ayers came through with a goal in the first half, and the St. Bernard offense exited the locker room even hungrier for the second, piling on four shots on goal in its first 10 minutes.

After the four close calls, senior Savanna Glover found a way to extend the Saints' lead to 2-0, booting a direct kick high past the goalkeeper.

The Eagles' lone ball handler broke away for Danville's only goal with 15 minutes remaining in the area game, forcing St. Bernard coach Shannon Mescher to put Glover the rest of the way out. The switch apparently worked, as the Saints held on to secure the victory and a coveted spot in the playoffs.

“It was smooth sailing the last 10 minutes,” Mescher said.

St. Bernard's defense gave the Eagles fits all evening, limiting the home team to just four shots. The Saints, meanwhile, created plenty of opportunities on offense, winding up with 20.

Abbie Mescher was credited with the assist on Ayers' goal.

St. Bernard's record now stands at an impressive 7-3-2.

The Saints' boys were also victorious versus Danville in a nightcap rife with drama.

Jacob Mynatt pushed through a penalty kick in the last minute of the game to play the hero in a 1-0 thriller for St. Bernard.
