Cullman Christian’s extremely gifted group of female student-athletes picked up right where it left off in volleyball three weeks ago, making a silky smooth transition into basketball season by winning the Cougar Classic on Saturday in Decatur.
The Lions jumped out to a 19-0 first-quarter lead en route to a 57-12 shellacking of Lindsay Lane on Friday and then dominated host Cornerstone Christian 47-18 in the championship contest the following day to cruise to the title.
Haley White was selected as the tournament MVP after letting loose for 43 points between both games. She also pitched in 11 steals, seven assists and five rebounds.
Jordan Canaday earned All-Tournament Team honors. She dished out 23 assists, scored 15 points and swiped eight steals.
Yancey York was a force to be reckoned with, averaging a monster double-double with 32 points and 31 rebounds to go along with four steals and four assists.
Other Cullman Christian contributors were Christine Aldijaili (13 rebounds, eight points and two assists) and Eliza Siegenthaler (10 rebounds, three steals and two points).
“It was a good start, and hopefully we’ll have another great year,” Coach White said. “If they go this way all season, it’ll be good for us.”
The Lions will open the regular season on Nov. 13.
