HANCEVILLE —
Wallace State Community College’s Athletic Department considered last year’s inaugural Lions Golf Classic and Ball Drop a success.
This year’s tournament has a chance to be even more popular.
The WSCC Athletic Department and the college’s Alumni Association, with support from the Brett Wetterich PGA Fund, are partnering to host a PGA pro golf clinic and the second annual Classic and Ball Drop on Oct. 7-8 at TP Country Club.
“We thought last year’s tournament went as smooth as possible and was a hit, especially since it was our first year to conduct one. I feel like this year’s (tournament) is going to be huge because we are partnering with the Wallace State Alumni Association,” Wallace State Athletic Director Paul Bailey said. “They should help pull in more alumni, and when you add the former athletes that will participate, we both should benefit tremendously.”
The events will begin on Sunday, Oct. 7, with a PGA Pro Clinic. Participants who register for the clinic will enjoy four 30-minute stations with PGA golf pros, learning various tips and techniques in chipping, putting, driving and one’s short game. The clinic will begin at 4 p.m., and registration fee is $100.
Following the clinic will be a VIP reception with possible special guest appearances by former Wallace State golfers Brett Wetterich and Fredrick Jacobsen.
The ball drop and four-person scramble are scheduled for Monday, Oct. 8. The ball drop is set for 11 a.m., complemented with a catered lunch for those participating in the tournament. Registration for the scramble will begin at 10 a.m. and a shotgun start is set for noon. The scramble registration fee is $400 for a team or $100 for an individual.
For participation in the ball drop, each one can be purchased for $10 and the prize is $1,000 for the ball that drops in the hole. Prize money will be divided if more than one ball falls into the hole, and if no ball drops in the hole, the closest one to the pin will be declared the winner.
Team prizes will be distributed to the top scramble finishers at the 19th hole.
Wallace State athletics has won six national championships in its history, competing in the Alabama Community College Conference (ACCC) and National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA).
Wallace State is the athletics home of golfers Wetterich and Jacobsen and MLB players Craig Kimbrel (the 2011 NL Rookie of the Year from the Atlanta Braves), starting pitcher Derek Holland of the Texas Rangers, infielder Jake Elmore of the Arizona Diamondbacks and right-hander Graham Godfrey of the Oakland A’s organization.
